MY POLICY ON

ECONOMIC

DEVELOPMENT

As your Mayor, I will:

  • Attract investment to expand and support new and existing businesses.

  • Ensure that Palmerston North is and remains an attractive place for private and public investment by minimising regulations and compliance costs for businesses.

  • Leverage economic strengths in education, research, and logistics and distribution; and where expertise exists locally, gear Council’s procurement processes towards local providers.

  • Continue to encourage and host cultural and national sporting events.

  • Increase long-term creative sector investment.

The city’s economy is vital to the wellbeing of the region. To build an inclusive and thriving future, we need to stimulate local commerce while encouraging investment and job creation.

MY POLICY ON

HOUSING

As your Mayor, I will:

  • Encourage partnerships with central government, Kāinga Ora and other housing providers to build social housing, and ease access for first-home buyers. This will ensure that the cost of providing social housing does not entirely fall on ratepayers.

  • Require Council to continue reviewing its land holdings and make more land readily available for homes.

  • Push to increase the supply of medium and high-density housing.

  • Change our planning rules to allow more types of homes such as duplexes, townhouses and apartments to enable a wider range of housing options.

  • Advocate to streamline regulatory and consenting processes to make it easier for developers to build houses.

Palmerston North is growing and over the last few years, we’ve seen steady population growth as more people choose to make our beautiful city their home. This means that we need to build more homes to keep up with housing demand. In addition, housing affordability and accessibility in the city remain a challenge, and the need for emergency housing is growing as is the rate of homelessness.

MY POLICY ON

INFRASTRUCTURE

As your Mayor, I will:

  • Progress the city’s Nature Calls wastewater management project at a cost ratepayers can afford.

  • Advocate for more central government investment in our core infrastructure so city growth can be accommodated in a timely and innovative way.

  • Support inclusive urban design that takes into consideration the needs of our older people and makes Palmerston North a more disability-friendly city.

  • Actively lobby central government to fund the inner ring-road, which will improve road safety by removing heavy vehicles from our suburban streets and improve business traffic flow.

  • Invest more resources into fixing potholes and maintaining footpaths.

At present 92,000 people call Palmerston North home. It is projected that the population will reach 100,000 by 2030, and 108,000 by 2043. This kind of growth brings many challenges - transport, congestion, housing provision and affordability, recreational amenities, supportive infrastructure and environmental degradation. For Palmy to be the vibrant, accessible, attractive and well-connected city of the future, we need to be smart about where and how we grow.

MY POLICY ON

THE ENVIRONMENT

As your Mayor, I will:

  • Supporting pragmatic, sensible solutions to better manage our wastewater.

  • Protecting and restoring our city’s biodiversity.

  • Advocating for attractive, safe, and accessible spaces, recreation areas, parks and walkways for leisure, sporting and outdoor activities.

  • Strengthening our emergency management preparedness and climate contingency planning, and ensure our systems and networks can respond effectively when needed.

  • Taking urgent action to achieve emissions reduction targets within the timeframes we have committed to.

  • Working to strengthen Council’s relationship with Rangitane, Horizons Regional Council, Manawatū District Council, and other territorial authorities to focus on cleaning our river.

Cleaner rivers and greener spaces are essential to making our city a better place to live, work, and raise a family. As your Mayor, I will support better environmental outcomes.
